There are a few more things that'll ruin your wedding. Last week we looked at pushy parents, not understanding wedding planning and bad vendors. This week we round out our list of things that you can avoid by simply knowing they could be an issue? These are not “weddings gone wrong” type of issues, but more subtle issues that can make your day wedding amazing or not so much.
4. Inappropriate toasts can be so embarrassing. These are often words that started with good intentions but get muddled because of alcohol or nerves. You can’t really control this but you can curb it. Have a talk with your maid of honor if she’s been known to put her foot in her mouth. Have your fiancé remind the best man to be flattering. But if you get the sense that either the maid of honor or best man isn’t up for the task, this is a red flag that you must address. I’ve seen toast given that became all the guests talked about. Because when it’s inappropriate, it’s never just a little awkward, it’s downright embarrassing.
5. Significant others that don’t align with your sensibilities can be devastating. When your bridesmaid’s date is the town drunk or curses like a sailor, you should reconsider her role. If you know one of the groomsmen is bringing the trashiest girl he can find, you should change his role. And if you don’t know whom your bridal party is bringing, don’t include them. Know ALL participants. I’ve witnessed a bride crying due to a groomsman’s date being super trashy, over flirty, & doing her best to flaunt herself to steal the spotlight. Better know the dates and significant others before you include them.
6. Hair & makeup trial run is critical. If you think for one minute you can skip this part you are asking for disaster. How’s that? Because your complexion and hair will be the trophy case for your stress caused by the events leading up to your wedding. Plus you have no idea how long the process will take. Or if you’ll like the up do, your eye shadow or lipstick. I don’t like to use words like “always” and “never”, but I always hear, “I am so glad we did a trial run.” And I always hear, “I wish we’d done a trial run with hair and makeup.” This is one part you can get a “do over” if you do a trial run. Your stylist will love you and you’ll look more amazing than you thought possible.
7. Cell phones & smart phones are amazing and the devil on wedding day. Everyone gets to capture moments to cherish. But no one seems to know proper etiquette or decorum regarding taking and SHARING photos. It’s not just terribly rude to be standing during the ceremony with a full size iPad snapping photos, it’s downright selfish. Yep, selfish. Your guests mean no harm, but they do this for themselves – and that is selfish. They don’t want to wait for your official wedding photos. And they want the photo they took. It’s their trophy.
But what’s worse is it can be offensive if these same selfish guests post unflattering images of you, your wedding & your guests. The images of your wedding are an extension of you. You should have a say in which images are made public. You can’t really control all the moments of the day. But you should honor the sanctity of your ceremony. You should honor and respect your family and friends and their reputation as it relates to how the world sees them. Most of the folks snapping photos mean no harm. But are they going to scrutinize each image carefully for what’s happening in the background? Will they make sure every little detail is what you want to world to see? Doubtful, very doubtful. Tell your guests the best they can give is to be self-less on your wedding day. Insist on no photography or video during your ceremony.
