Al Harris has been interested in the outdoors and photography since his teenage years growing up on the edge of a lake in middle Tennessee. Many of his life’s endeavors have taken him to picturesque landscapes around the globe. Al has traveled to most of the western European countries, Morocco, Venezuela, Bolivia, Costa Rica, as well as China, Hong Kong and Japan. Each of these adventures was photo documented with a focus on architecture, urban design and landscapes.

Before he began traveling, Al received his BA in Architecture from UNC Charlotte and subsequently received his Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduation he worked for several design firms along the mid-Atlantic seaboard. Each of his positions helped him realize that much of design is spent indoors; in front of various computer applications that somehow seem to extract the subtle beauty out of occupied natural landscapes. Al took every chance to get out of the office for site investigations or construction oversight. Of course each of these field trips provided chances for photo documentation.

With his education, training, need for adventure and desire to work on noble causes, Al now spends his time seeking out compelling landscapes with unique photo opportunities. His photography not only gives him a chance to capture the inherent beauty of a place, but also provides him the opportunity to protect, preserve and promote these special, and often fragile landscapes.
